KWARA KILLINGS: PDP condemns govt’s ‘weak and reactive’ response

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the killing of more than 100 people in Woro community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

In a statement on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, called for an immediate inquiry into what it described as security failures and the handling of early warning signals ahead of the attack.

He said the incident was “another painful reminder of the heightened insecurity Nigerians have been confronted with under the present administration.”

The PDP commiserated with families of the victims and residents of the affected community, noting claims by local leaders that warnings of an impending attack had been raised without what it described as adequate preventive action.

According to the party, the response that followed the attack was “weak and reactive,” and underscored the need for a thorough review of security operations in the area.

The opposition party demanded the establishment of an independent panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killings, including the alleged failure to act on early warnings. It also called for the immediate provision of humanitarian assistance, medical care and temporary shelter for displaced persons and survivors in Woro community.

In addition, the PDP urged the federal government to convene an emergency national security summit involving key stakeholders and to invest in community-based early warning systems to ensure that credible threats are addressed promptly.

Reiterating its earlier position on tackling insecurity, the party called for a “whole-of-society approach,” including improved intelligence sharing between federal and state security agencies, consideration of state policing, economic development in affected areas, and regular public security briefings.

The PDP said such measures had become necessary, arguing that what it described as ad hoc and reactionary responses had resulted in continued loss of lives.

“The protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government,” the statement added, urging the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise decisive action to address the country’s security challenges.
