KWASU, Unilorin join nationwide ASUU strike
The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) and Kwara State University (KWASU) have joined the nationwide warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
This decision was made after marathon congresses held on Monday, October 13, 2025, by the respective university chapters of ASUU.
The chairman of ASUU at the University of Ilorin, Dr. Alex Akanmu, confirmed their commitment to the strike, stating, “We are committed to the ideals of the strike, so we have joined the nationwide strike.”
Similarly, Dr. Abdulganiyu Salau, chairman of ASUU at KWASU, also confirmed their participation.
This action aligns with the broader ASUU strike, which commenced on Monday, October 13, 2025, to press for demands such as the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, release of withheld salaries, revitalisation funding for public universities, payment of promotion arrears, and settlement of outstanding salary differentials.
The federal government has responded to the strike by reaffirming its “no work, no pay” policy and directing vice-chancellors to ensure full compliance.
This directive, issued in a circular dated October 13, 2025, by the minister of education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, mandates roll calls and physical headcounts of academic staff to identify those participating in the strike, with salaries to be withheld for the duration of the industrial action.

However, members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), who are not participating in the strike, are to continue receiving their full entitlements.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the government’s “no work, no pay” stance, calling it an unproductive threat that will not resolve the crisis.
The University of Ilorin, established in 1975, is a federal government-owned public research university in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, and is known for being one of the largest universities in Nigeria by landmass. It has consistently been reported by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as the most sought-after Nigerian university for the past ten consecutive years.
