Rainstorm destroys 200 houses, schools in Kwara

About 200 houses and public schools as well as electric cables were on March 31 damaged by a rainstorm in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Ogele/Eyenkorin in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State also experienced similar rainstorm incident.

A Nigerian Sketch report said the devastating rainstorm which accompanied the rain on Sunday evening disrupted the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Ogele-Eyenkorin and neighbouring communities in Asa Local Government Area, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Residents said about 200 houses had their roofs blown off, while over 20 buildings collapsed, including schools, shops, and business premises in the affected areas.

The vice chairman of Ifelodun community in Eyenkorin of Kwara State Zubairu Abiola, lamented the rainstorm incident and called for intervention from the state government.

“The destruction is huge. This has resulted in many residents becoming homeless suddenly. This will require much rehabilitation from the state government.”

He said that many residents of the community and its adjourning areas were now homeless as a result of the rainstorm destruction.

The downpour, accompanied by strong winds, also brought down electricity poles and wires, plunging many areas into darkness while the drainage of the Kuntu bridge in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state was blocked by the debris gathered by the wind.

The worst-hit communities Kwara State included Eyenkorin, Ogele, Ifelodun, Ifesowapo, Orisunbare, Odo-Akuo, Apata Ajele, Alagbado Eyenkorin, Basa, Yakoyo, and Lekki.

Among the structures damaged by the rainstorm were the Ogele Primary School, Ansarul-Deen Primary School, and D-Light A-Nur Nursery/Primary School, whose roofs were completely blown off.

At least, 15 private schools in Kwara State, including Community Secondary School, Apata Ajele, and Wilson School, Alagbado, also suffered severe damage, with some classrooms collapsing while the windstorm also blew off the roof of the Government Day Secondary School, and damaged the baseball facilities in Adeta in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state.
