Kwara firefighters prevent catastrophic gas explosion in Ilorin
Kwara State Fire Service on Sunday responded swiftly to avert a potential gas explosion in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The incident involved a 12.5kg gas cylinder profusely leaking inside the kitchen of a two-bedroom flat on Al-Mustafa Street, Olorunsogo Area.
Residents, upon noticing the leak, promptly evacuated the premises and alerted emergency services
Firefighters, demonstrating professionalism and technical expertise, safely removed the compromised cylinder from the kitchen to a secure outdoor location, thereby preventing a devastating explosion. This incident highlights the critical importance of proper gas cylinder placement and immediate action during emergencies.
Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, through PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, Head, Media and Publicity, expressed significant concern regarding the common practice of storing gas cylinders inside kitchens.

He emphasized that this habit poses a severe risk to both lives and property.
Olumuyiwa strongly advised residents of Kwara State and Nigerians nationwide to install their gas cylinders outside the kitchen, with the hose passed inside for use.
He further explained that external placement of cylinders makes it considerably easier to control leaks and prevent catastrophic incidents.
The Director commended the firefighters for their swift and effective intervention, which ultimately saved the community from a major tragedy. This recommendation aligns with general safety guidelines for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage, which advocate for good ventilation and accessibility in case of leaks.
