NPFL: Kwara United fire coach after home loss, as search for replacement begins

Kwara United has sacked their head coach, Tunde Sanni, following a 0-1 home defeat to Abia Warriors in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 7 game on Sunday.

This decision came amidst the club’s recent poor performance, which also included an early exit from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing 5-3 on aggregate to Asante Kotoko of Ghana.

They initially secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg played in Benin City, Nigeria. However, they suffered a 3-1 defeat in the second leg held in Kumasi, Ghana, which ultimately led to their elimination from the competition.

Assistant coach Ashifat Suleiman has been appointed to take charge of the team on an interim basis until a new head coach is appointed. Veteran tactician Gbenga Ogunbote, who previously managed Shooting Stars, Enyimba, and Rangers, is reportedly a strong candidate to become the new technical adviser.

Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu is also reportedly on Kwara United’s radar for the role.

After the club’s elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup, last week Sanni had expressed disappointment with his team’s inability to convert their chances against Asante Kotoko.

I’m highly disappointed that we scored three goals in Ghana and we couldn’t even convert one here. It’s really sad,” Sanni reacted

In a statement, the club’s chairman, Mr. Kumbi Titiloye described the early exit as painful and regrettable. He pleaded with fans to forgive the team, assuring them that Kwara United is determined to bounce back stronger.

“We apologize to our teeming and loyal fans and supporters for this unfortunate result. It was never our plan to crash at this early stage. ”

“We are poised to come back stronger, make amends in the league, and give our supporters something to cheer about’ Titiloye stated
