2027: Ilorin Emirate Council backs Tinubu, picks Senator Mustapha for Kwara governor
The political landscape for the 2027 general elections is beginning to take shape in Kwara State as the Ilorin Emirate Political Advisory Council (IEPAC) officially declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election and endorsed Senator Saliu Mustapha for the state’s governorship.
The IEPAC, regarded as the apex body of elders and stakeholders within the Kwara Central Senatorial District, announced its stance during a press conference held in the state capital on Tuesday.
According to the council’s national coordinator, Dr. Yakub Yahaya Oloriegbe, and secretary, Lt. Col. Abubakar Edun, the decision was reached following a “comprehensive assessment” of the current political climate and the performance of key officeholders.

Dr. Oloriegbe highlighted President Tinubu’s three-year track record as the primary driver for the endorsement, specifically noting the administration’s impact on the Ilorin Emirate.
“We unanimously endorse the aspiration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office. The council believes the President deserves another four years to consolidate on the achievements recorded so far, particularly citing the support and opportunities extended to Kwara Central.”
Turning its focus to the 2027 governorship race, the council threw its weight behind Senator Saliu Mustapha, the current representative for Kwara Central at the National Assembly. The council described the Turaki of Ilorin as a “widely acceptable” candidate with the requisite capability to lead Kwara State after the current administration.
‘No one is excluded’
Despite the high-profile endorsements, the IEPAC leadership was quick to clarify that their preference does not mean the door is closed to other contenders.
“This endorsement does not in any way preclude other aspirants from exercising their legitimate rights,” the council stated. “It should not be construed as an attempt to shut out other sons and daughters of Kwara State or the Ilorin Emirate who may choose to pursue their aspirations.”
